About the event
This chapter addresses the influences of heritage and assimilation, alongside cultural norms and humiliation. For some, rituals and cultural customs mark their entrance to the world. Language and the rules of citizenship become a blueprint. As benign humans, we become impressed by limiting societal oppressions and the challenge of achieving prosperity and self-esteem. We learn that Assimilation can be closely linked to a sense of belonging, engendered or dispelled at an early age. Humiliation occurs with negative projections, stigmas and the oppressions that, unchecked, can keep us small. I share some of my journey and heritage experience. The experience of Windrush migrants’ rejection and repatriation is highlighted as an example of how institutional power can humiliate individuals, migrant communities, black people and people of colour.
