Dr Isha McKenzie-Mavinga, a leading expert in integrating anti-racism and psychotherapy, marks the anniversary of her book A Black Empathic Approach – Growing from Rage to Compassion with this presentation for counsellors, psychotherapists, coaches and other helping professionals.
Empathy is a therapeutic skill often taken for granted, and rarely examined in terms of how it can support experience, processing and emergence from the trauma of racism. Many practitioners find it difficult to adapt their mindset to this broader sense of empathy — SOME ARE CHALLENGED BY THEIR OWN EXPERIENCES AND FEELINGS OF RAGE raising an important question: how does addressing the impact of racism become part of the relational process?
