Greetings from my ancestral home Tobago.Once again I am in my happy place. Having completed the manuscript for my new book, Title 'A Black Empathic Approach to Psychotherapy: Growing from Rage to Compassion'.
I am relieved to have space and time for additional self-care. It is 5.30 PM on Sunday, one week after arriving. The. sun is going down. The birds are singing their final serenade to the daylight. Dogs in the neighbourhood are barking, and some sheep are calling each other. I can hear steel pans in the distance. Practice for Carnival 2025, I guess.
I am in my happy place.
Those who write will know the feeling of freedom and letting go after submitting a major project. I am glad for a breathing space to reflect and nurture myself, until I hear from. the copy editor.
Each time I finish a book, I say, "never again" The intensity that goes with expressing myself on paper, becomes my life. and there is so much tension to release. I said 'never again after each degree, and 'never again' after having babies. Now I am saying 'never again' after four books, I can’t promise myself that I will stay away from writing because there is a poetry collection rolling around inside of me. I started organising this in 2020 and hope that it will manifest in the coming year.
I love writing, it a place where I can express my thoughts openly and honestly and invite readers to connect. A lot went on alongside the journey of writing the book. It is an expression of personal, political and psychotherapeutic thought about engaging with the traumatic impact of racism. I hope that readers will engage with the style and presentation of the book and be encouraged to enter a dialogue about my approach. I will soon be presenting some online talks about the book.
