Last week, I had the profound experience of leading a discussion on chapter 8 of my book, A Black Empathic Approach to Psychotherapy: Growing from Rage to Compassion. The chapter, titled “Unburied and Undried Tears,” invites deep reflection on the trauma caused by anti-Black racism—both historically and in everyday life—and the ways we respond to and cope with this pain. The meeting was moving, filled with honest emotions and shared stories that connected us to our ancestors and to each other in a powerful way.
This blog post explores the healing power of shared tears, the role of A black Empathic Approach in psychotherapy, and how these elements create spaces for growth, understanding, and compassion.
The Power of Tears in Healing Trauma
Tears are often seen as a sign of vulnerability, but they are also a profound expression of healing. In the discussion group, the poem I shared about my time in Ghana sparked visceral reactions. Participants connected deeply with the emotions conveyed, revealing how tears can bridge personal and collective experiences of trauma.
Tears in this context are not just about sadness or grief. They represent:
Acknowledgment of pain that has been ignored or suppressed
A release of emotional burdens carried across generations
A connection to shared history and identity
When people allow themselves to cry together, they create a space where empathy flows freely. This shared vulnerability fosters trust and opens pathways for healing that words alone cannot reach.
A Black Empathic Approach as a Therapeutic tool
Black goes beyond traditional empathy by centering the lived experiences of Black individuals and communities. It acknowledges the unique historical and ongoing traumas caused by systemic racism and validates the emotional responses to these experiences.
In psychotherapy, this approach means:
Recognizing the cultural and historical context of trauma
Creating a safe space for emotional expression without judgment
Encouraging authentic connection between therapist and client
Supporting growth from rage to compassion
During the discussion, the group experienced this approach firsthand. Our verbal commiserations and shared reflections created a moment of collective empathy that was both healing and empowering.

The Role of Ancestral Connection in Healing
One of the most moving parts of the discussion was the link between our tears and our ancestors. The chapter’s title, Unburied and Undried Tears, speaks to the unresolved grief passed down through generations. Recognizing this connection helps us understand that healing is not just personal but collective.
By honoring our ancestors’ pain and resilience, we:
Validate our own emotional experiences
Draw strength from their survival and wisdom
Create continuity between past, present, and future
This ancestral connection deepens the therapeutic process and enriches the meaning of shared tears.
Stories of Tears and Motherly Closeness
The meeting ended with participants sharing personal stories about tears and closeness with their mothers. These stories highlighted how early relationships shape our emotional lives and coping mechanisms.
Mothers often serve as the first safe space for emotional expression. When we share tears with them, we learn that vulnerability can be met with love and acceptance. This early experience influences how we later engage in therapy and relationships.
Reflections Inspired by Film
After the meeting, I watched the movie In Her Shoes. Shelly Winters, playing a grandmother, helped her estranged granddaughters heal through love, integrity, and congruence. The film beautifully illustrated how family members can support each other through grief and loss.
This story resonated deeply with me. It reminded me that healing is often a family journey, and that empathy within families can transform pain into connection.
Creating Spaces for Black Empathic Healing
The discussion group provided a precious space to reflect on my writing and its impact. It also showed how important it is to create environments where a black Empathic approach can thrive. These spaces allow for:
Open sharing of emotions without fear of dismissal
Validation of experiences shaped by racism and trauma
Collective healing through shared stories and tears
Psychotherapy that embraces Ablack empathic Approach can help individuals move from rage to compassion, fostering resilience and growth.
Practical Steps for Embracing A black Empathic Approach in Therapy
For therapists and individuals interested in this approach, here are some practical ways to incorporate A black empathic Approach into healing work:
Listen deeply to the cultural and historical context of clients’ experiences
Encourage emotional expression, including tears, as a natural part of healing
Validate feelings without minimizing or pathologizing them
Create group spaces where shared experiences can build community and support
Honor ancestral connections as part of the healing narrative
These steps help build trust and open pathways to authentic healing.
Healing from trauma caused by anti-Black racism requires more than individual effort. It calls for shared spaces where tears are welcomed, empathy is centered, and ancestral pain is acknowledged. The discussion on Unburied and Undried Tears showed how powerful these moments can be. They remind us that healing is a collective journey, one that moves us from rage to compassion and connects us deeply to ourselves and each other.
